Michael Braidwood

General Manager

Michael Braidwood is the General Manager of Education City Golf, and is responsible for the pre and post operating of the club.

The Education City Golf Club is a landmark project for Qatar and the world of golf, offering a revolutionary and holistic approach to growing the game of golf. It comprises a range of short game formats, a state-of-the-art learning and practice facility and an18-hole championship golf course, 6-hole championship course and 9-hole par-3 course all designed by two-time major winner Jose Maria Olazabal

A Certified Club Manager and Advanced Fellow of the PGA, Michael is a very experienced Golf Industry Professional. Michael has a solid educational background and qualified to be an assessor for the PGA’s Director of Golf Program in 2012.

Michael’s previous experiences have seen him hold the following positions: Director of Education for the Club Managers Association of Europe (2014 – 2017) where he was responsible for the delivery of their club education programmes and two levels of certification: the Club Management Diploma and Certified Club Manager, Operations Director for Braemar Golf Developments (2010 – 2014), where he was responsible for all of Braemar Golf’s projects that were operational, and this saw him working on projects in Russia, Bulgaria, Bahrain, Oman and the UK. Prior to that, Michael was the CEO of Bahrain International Golf Course Company (2008 – 2010) overseeing four business units and representing their interests in the Riffa Views development project. Before being promoted to CEO, Michael was General Manager of the Riffa Golf Club, Bahrain (1998 – 2008). This semi private golf club hosted multiple events, including the European Seniors Tour, Tour Championship on 2 occasions and the PGA’s Pro Captain Challenge on 6 occasions. Before moving to Bahrain, Michael was a Golf Professional at The Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland.

He is married to Judy and has two children Ben (19) and Hannah (17).

His hobbies include golf, cooking and family.

Mohammed Al Naimi

Deputy General Manager

Mohammed holds a Higher Diploma in Physical Education from University of Semmelweis Budapest, Hungary, a Diploma in Special Education from Qatar University, and Bachelor of Science in Education Major in Physical Education from University of Qatar.

Mohammed held various positions as Stage Manager, Competition Manager for Gymnastics in the Asian Games in Doha, General Secretary of the Asian Gymnastics Union, Executive Director and General Secretary of Qatar Gymnastics Federation and became part of the organizing team of an International Event – the Qatar Modern Pentathlon: Champion of Champions where he was awarded the Thanaa Award.

He then assumed the role of Recreation Services Manager at Qatar Foundation where he was responsible for raising the profile and standards of Recreation Services before being promoted to the role of Director of Community Affairs in Qatar Foundation, where he was instrumental in delivering comprehensive and easily accessible recreation and sports services, growing participation levels and delivering comprehensive recreation and sports services to the Education City community. He also led the Qatar Foundation National Sport Day which was awarded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Qatar.

Mohammed joined Qatar International Golf Club and as the Deputy General Manager for Qatar International Golf Club. Mohammed has the responsibility to provide leadership and management to the various departmental teams, generate knowledge, interest and support of the project amongst internal and external stakeholders, contract local partners and sponsors, assist in the development and execution of strategic and business planning and execute all objectives to ensure the golf club is ready for operations on completion of construction. 

Darren Smith

Golf Course Superintendent

Darren an Australian Citizen originally from New Zealand moved to Australia in the late 1980’s where he gained his Golf Course Management Qualifications and from there has honed his skills on both pre and post opening of golf courses in Australia. Having moved to the Middle East in 2001 his experience now spans nearly 15 years in the region.

Darren spent 11 years with EMAAR PROPERTIES PJSC, Arabian Ranches Golf & Polo Club Dubai, where he was working as the Emaar Area Golf Course Manager overseeing the construction component for their international and local properties throughout the UAE, KSA and Egypt. He was also tasked with the responsibility of the Landscaping Division for Emaar Address Hotels during his time with Emaar.

Darren joined Qatar International Golf Club in 2013 during the early stages of the project and during the construction period will be responsible for overseeing the golf course construction and ensuring the protection of the owners’ asset, before taking over the maintenance, operation and management of the golf course once operational.

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

Rhys Beecher

Director of Golf

Rhys is the Director of Golf at Education City Golf Club and has been involved with the project since 2015, with both design and pre-opening operations.

Rhys is responsible for the success of the all golf related activities at Education City Golf Club and ensuring the landmark project achieves the vision of Qatar Foundation.

Passionate about education, Rhys holds degrees in both Professional Golf from Birmingham University (UK) and Global Business Management, as well as a further diploma in Sports Management Golf both from Bournemouth University (UK).

Rhys is a member of the Club Managers Association of Europe and achieved a Club Managers Diploma in 2017, whilst progressing through the Management Development pathway.  

As a PGA professional, Rhys achieved Advanced Professional status in 2016, whilst also graduating through the PGA Director of Golf Programme.

Prior to moving to Qatar in 2015, Rhys spent nine years (2006-2015) at The Address Montgomerie, Dubai a premium golf resort set within Dubai’s exclusive Emirates Hills. As a part of Emaar Hospitality Group, the facility continues to be one of the highest performing in the region.

In addition to experience within the Middle East Region, Rhys previously worked at both Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and The Celtic Manor Resort, Wales. Host to the 2010 Ryder Cup, The Celtic Manor is one of the United Kingdom’s premier resorts offering an expansive golf, hotel, conference and leisure experiences.

Rhys is married with three daughters (Chloe, Alexis and Carys). Both Rhys and his wife Gemma are foodies and enjoy cooking and eating out.
